Hiking Trails

The village’s hiking trails take you into a natural area with a long history. Here, Åsens’ former inhabitants gathered firewood and let their animals graze. The land has since regrown into a mixed forest where several rare plant and animal species now thrive, and parts of the area are protected as a nature reserve.

    Utmarksleden

    Length: 4.3 km

The trail follows a forest road down to Åsens Nature Station by the bird lake Ruppen. From there, you follow paths through the forest and meadowland back to Åsens By. At the Timber Cottages, you can stay overnight; the cottages have a stove, and outside, there are barbecue areas and an outdoor toilet. At Tuta Källa, there is a shelter, barbecue area, and outdoor toilet, and at the Nature Station, there is also a barbecue area and outdoor toilet.

At Åsens Nature Station, you can also take a detour to the Åsens Utmark Nature Reserve. The route is about 1.3 km. The Utmarksleden connects to the larger hiking trail, the John Bauer Trail, heading towards Bunn.

    Naturskogsleden

Length: 1.5 km + access road

The Naturskogsleden trail passes through the Åsens Utmark Nature Reserve, where you travel through historic land. Originally, the surroundings were grazing land, but over the years, the area has regrown, and the forest has remained untouched for a hundred years. Some of the pines in the area are approaching 200 years old, and here you can find species such as spruce fungus, lady’s slipper orchid, and along the shores of Ruppen, you can usually find nesting great northern divers and whooper swans.

The trail starts at Åsen Nature Station, about 2 km from the village center. You can walk or drive there. If you drive, take the Bunnvägen road to the Nature Station (it is not allowed to drive through the cultural reserve).

    Hagmarksleden

    Length: 1 km

The Hagmarksleden trail takes you past ancient fields and stone cairns that have provided food for people for a thousand years. Along the route, there are opportunities to stop and rest at our cozy timber cottages. Here, you’ll find a barbecue area, benches to sit on, and an outdoor toilet.

    To Tuta

    Length: 700 m + access road

The farm cottage Stora Åsaskogen, “Tutan,” dates back to the 1700s and originally consisted of a cottage, barn, shed, and root cellar. After the last tenant moved out in 1875, the buildings were relocated, and the old barn now stands at the Haurida Heritage Center. Nearby is Tuta Källa, where groundwater reaches all the way to the surface. According to old legends, it was a sacred spring. The trail starts 700 meters from the village center.
